Description
Scott's Almshouses, consisting of Nos. 8, 9, and 10, are a row of three almshouses built in 1896 by architect John E. Leake. The buildings are constructed from red brick with stone dressings and feature a slate roof. They are two storeys high and have five bays.
On the ground floor, there are 2-, 3-, and 2-light mullion and transom square bay windows, topped by a continuous parapet. The entrances are marked by short stone columns in antis and have glazed doors with overlights. The upper floor features cross-windows adorned with gabled pediments, moulded copings, and ball and vase finials.
The structure is capped with three tall banded stacks located at the rear of the ridge right, forward of the ridge centre, and far right. On the right return, there is a three-light stone bay window with a carved plaque above, which has a segmental pediment and raised lettering that reads: 'TRUSTEES/ SAMUEL SCOTT STANLEY/JOSEPH GALE GEORGE MELLEN/ REVD.CANNON THOMPSON/ ROBERT G EMSLEY/ JOHN E. LEAKE ARCHITECT'. The interior has not been inspected.
