Description
Hunslet Cemetery Chapels are mid-19th century cemetery chapels built in a Neo-Norman style. Constructed from coursed squared gritstone with a slate roof featuring diminishing courses, the structure consists of a single building with six bays. The east side has paired entrances within a short gabled porch that projects outward. These entrances feature double board doors, Norman-style arches, and paired attached columns, all set in a chamfered projection with a stepped hoodmould. Above, there is a high coped gable with a round window and corner buttresses. The left and right returns each have a four-light round-arched window with a corbel table above. The chapels are adorned with round-headed windows that have attached columns and pilasters, which are positioned between the break line of the sill moulding and the corbel table. The wide gable coping and gabled bellcote at each end enhance the design. The north and south ends feature round-arched doorways as the main entrances. Centrally located against the west wall and directly opposite the cemetery gateway is a memorial stone dedicated to Charles Grosvenor of Hunslet, who died in 1867. This memorial is made of pink and grey polished granite and features a cusped arch with paired attached columns, a gabled top displaying the monogram 'CG' and the year '1870', along with a heraldic dog at the apex. The interior of the southern chapel has been reordered, and the dividing wall has been removed; the northern end has not been inspected.
