Description
The bust of John Scott, located at Scott's Almshouses, was created around 1896. It features a square gritstone stepped base with a plinth that has fluted corner pilasters and a brass plaque. Above this is a chamfered stone upper plinth topped with a white marble bust of John Scott, which is nearly life-size and depicts him in contemporary dress. The brass plaque commemorates the erection of the bust in memory of John Scott Esq. by Samuel Scott Stanley, although the date is not legible. John Scott, who lived on Hunslet Road, made a will in 1891 specifying that if he had not established almshouses during his lifetime, £10,000 should be allocated by his trustees for the construction of ten almshouses. His will was validated in 1894, and the almshouses were nearing completion by 1898, as noted in the Leeds Charity Commissioners' Report from that year.
