Description
The memorial in Hunslet Cemetery, built in 1885, is made of ashlar and carved stone and stands approximately 4 meters high. It features a three-stage base, a plinth, and a tapering square shaft that bears an inscription. The shaft is adorned with a band that includes paterae and is topped with a pedimented capstone, which is surmounted by a kneeling draped female figure. The inscription commemorates Emily Whittaker, aged 30 years; Mary Ellen Taylor, aged 26 years; Mary Dodgson, aged 23 years; Elizabeth Ann Fisher, aged 21 years; Elizabeth Westerman, aged 41 years, interred at Burmantofts Cemetery; and Sarah Ann Levitt, aged 21 years, interred at Beeston Hill Cemetery, all of whom tragically lost their lives due to the fall of a cut nail works at Hunslet on July 1st, 1885. The inscription concludes with the phrase, "IN THE MIDST OF LIFE WE ARE IN DEATH." Additionally, a framed inscription on the plinth notes that the memorial was erected by voluntary subscription from various cut nail works in Leeds, Stalybridge, Middlesbrough, and Glasgow, as a tribute to the memory of co-workers who died while working at Messrs Inghams and Co in Hunslet.
