Description
The Terrace Cottage, located approximately 140 metres to the south-west of Harewood House, was originally a brew-house for Harewood House. It was converted into the estate manager's house around 1950 and is now a residential property. The building dates from the mid to late 18th century and features mid-20th century additions that are not of special interest. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a Westmorland green-slate roof and has an irregular plan.
The two-storey main block provides a single room and has a single-storey wing attached to the south-west angle. The main block faces the driveway leading to the stables from Harewood House and has a deep plinth. It features a large central tripartite sash window with stone mullions, each with a recessed panel and a casement-moulded triangular pediment above. The eaves cornice is also casement-moulded, and the hipped roof does not have a stack.
On the left-hand return wall, there is a plinth with a benchmark and a doorway with an overlight set in an eared architrave. Above this doorway is a 9-pane sash window with a projecting sill. The wing attached at an oblique angle to the left corner has a 12-pane sash window in an eared architrave and a roof that is hipped to the left. There is also a rear extension from the 20th century that is in keeping with the original structure.
