Description

A terrace of 14 houses built between 1867 and 1886 in Far Headingley for John Wood, a local speculative builder. The houses are constructed of coursed gritstone with ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs, featuring 14 tall stone chimney stacks. They are two storeys high.

Nos. 1 to 8 have raised quoins at either end. Each house has a segmental arched doorway to the right, with an ashlar surround topped with a bracketed hood. The doors are part-glazed 4-panel doors with plain overlights. To the left of each doorway is a canted stone bay window with plain sashes; above is a pair of plain sashes. All windows have segment-arched heads.

Nos. 9 to 13 are similar in design, with identical door surrounds and doors, and canted bay windows with flat heads. The two sashes above also have flat heads. No. 14 differs slightly, featuring a central doorway with a similar surround, a canted bay window to the left, and a single plain sash to the left of the doorway, with three similar plain sashes above.

A set of steps leads to the front doors of each house, increasing in number as the ground level slopes to the south. No. 1 has two steps, and No. 14 has twelve. Iron balustrades are present on the steps of Nos. 5 to 14.

The interiors of Nos. 7, 11, and 14 retain nearly all their original features, including original doors, skirting boards, picture rails, plaster coving, ceiling roses, and fireplaces. The original staircases survive in all the houses, and it is reported that most of the other houses also retain similar original features.
