Description
The Cottages, comprising two houses at Nos. 1 and 2, date from the late 17th century and have undergone 20th-century alterations. They are constructed of coursed stone with a concrete tile roof. The building is long and low, arranged over two storeys with five windows. The first floor has four-light windows, with some centre mullions missing, and a smaller single-light window at the centre. The ground floor windows are three-, four- and five-light openings. A continuous moulded string course runs above the lintel of the large, moulded doorway, which now has a modern door. Further modern casements are present, alongside a tall, moulded end stack to the left and a rebuilt stack in the centre.
Inside No. 2, also known as Cheadle Cottage, is a wide 17th-century fireplace with chamfered voussoirs built against the dividing wall with No. 1. This fireplace was likely part of a back-to-back arrangement, with the original main doorway (now the entrance to No. 1) opening into the kitchen, and the surviving fireplace located in what was a heated parlour. The upper floor retains original 17th-century plasterwork friezes depicting mythological figures, with a moulded cornice below. Also on the upper floor are original 17th-century roof trusses with king posts and curved side braces. The re-roofing likely involved the removal of gable copings and kneelers; two finials dated 1663 are now used as garden ornaments. The presence of a former porch over No. 1 suggests it was originally a secondary building but of earlier date.
