Description

Boston House, now a furniture store, is a large building dating from around 1800, constructed from ashlar magnesian limestone with a stone slate roof. It stands three storeys high and features five bays, with a two-storey wing at the rear left. To the right, an attached wing wall conceals a one-storey addition. The building has a plinth and a central six-panel door with an overlight that has radial glazing bars, all framed by a distyle Doric stone porch with a fluted frieze and a dentilled pediment. The second, fourth, and fifth bays have projecting stone sills beneath flat arches for the sash windows, while the first bay has two later doorways with six-pane overlights, one of which leads to a side passage.

On the first floor, there is a sill band for the windows similar to the ground floor. The second floor features unequally hung nine-pane sashes linked by a sill band, all set beneath a dentilled eaves cornice. The rendered stacks on the right end and to the left of the second bay each have nine flues, while there is a single-flue end stack on the left. The attached wing wall on the right has a blind window and doorway, then returns forward with another blind window and a square end pier.

The right return has a porch at the angle with the wing, which is lit by an iron roof lantern. The left return of the wing is illuminated by several sash windows. Inside, there is a contemporary wooden staircase with square baluster rods, turned newels, and a ramped handrail. The lobby off the left side of the hall features two round arches, and the fireplace in the rear-right room has a wooden surround with a garlanded frieze.
