Description
Numbers 2, 4, and 4A, along with the attached railings, are four houses that have been converted into offices. They were built in the early 19th century and underwent restoration in the late 20th century. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and are located on a corner site, with No. 27 York Place on the left side.
The structures are three storeys tall with a basement and feature eight first-floor windows. The block on the right is slightly stepped down and includes two round-headed doorways with fanlights and panelled doors; the left door has an overlight that was likely added later. All windows are sashes with glazing bars, flat brick arches, and stone sills. There is a continuous sill band on the first floor and fielded-panel aprons beneath the ground-floor windows. The eaves band has been restored, and there are brick stacks on the roof. The left return of the building is similar in design and is two windows wide.
The interior was not inspected. These houses were part of the development on the south side of York Place between 1834 and 1850, likely intended as private residences. However, due to their proximity to mills and the railway, they were converted into woollen warehouses by 1886.
