Description

Numbers 2 and 4 on Britannia Street, along with their attached railings, are mid-19th century woollen warehouses featuring a basement. The buildings are constructed from red and brown brick, with the top storey rebuilt in a brighter red brick, and include stone dressings and a slate roof. They have a U-shaped plan with four storeys above a basement and nine first-floor windows arranged in three bays. The narrower outer bays project slightly and are gabled, with 4-pane sash windows throughout.

On the ground floor, there is a central goods entrance framed by a stone surround with pilasters, an entablature, and a shallow pediment. To the right, there is a wide brick segmental-arched entrance with four stone steps, a 4-pane overlight, and flanking windows. A wide segmental-arched window is located to the far left, with sash windows on either side of the central entrance. The upper floors feature sash windows in brick arches, with a round-arched window in the top floor's outer bays set within a full-height shallow round-arched recess. Above the central entrance, the windows are also in a full-height recess. Stone bands are present at the floor and sill levels, along with eaves and gable coping, and a central panel above the eaves flanked by blocks.

On the right return, there are six evenly spaced flat-arched windows. A large stone porch is located at the far right, featuring a panelled door within a pilastered surround, complete with an entablature and cornice. The porch has stone floor and sill bands, and stone and wrought-iron brackets above the second-floor windows, which may have supported a signboard.

The basement railings consist of moulded standards with vase finials and plain rails topped with spearhead finials. The interior has not been inspected.
