Description

Numbers 6 and 8 on York Place are offices built in 1902. The building is constructed of red brick with terracotta details, and it features cast-iron basement railings. It has three storeys and a basement, with an added attic storey. The design consists of two identical blocks, each with three bays arranged in a 3:1:3 window pattern. Each block has steps leading up to a central entrance, which features a segmental arch in a moulded architrave, a small three-light window, and a plaque above. The flanking and upper-floor windows are set in architraves, with eared detailing on the first floor. Pilasters at each end and between the two blocks rise to a bracketed eaves cornice, which has central panels with raised lettering that reads '1902 THR/JRR'. The interior has not been inspected. The basement railings display Art Nouveau style scrolled panels between plain rails. Historically, in Robinson's Directory for 1903/4, the building was listed as Nos 6 & 7, York Place Buildings, and housed various businesses including the Automatic Hot Air Feed Fire Grate Company, manufacturers of straw hats, linings, clothing and mantles, as well as a woollen manufacturer, a furrier, a woollen and trimming merchant, a tailor, and a manufacturers' agent. This contrasts with the use of York Place Buildings, which was primarily for woollen warehouses according to the 1886 Insurance map.
