Description
Number 56 is an office building dated 1873, with alterations made in the 20th century. It was likely designed by Henry Walker for William Smith. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and has a slate roof, along with wrought-iron railings and a gate. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style and consists of four storeys over a basement, featuring two uneven bays.
On the right side, there are panelled double doors set in a moulded pointed arch beneath a gable, which has two small Gothic windows and a quatrefoil opening. The canted bay rises to a turret topped with an octagonal spire and gargoyles. The wider left bay includes cross windows on the ground floor, paired flat-arched windows on the first and second floors, and three Gothic windows with two lights and plate tracery on the third floor. The gable is decorated with quatrefoil plaques and has an incised date, topped by a crocketed finial.
The interior has not been inspected. The basement features railings made of an ashlar wall with square panels of ironwork that have a central boss and circles, along with standards that have leaf finials.
