Description
Number 19 and the attached buildings are a woollen warehouse, now used as offices, dated 1859 and converted in the 20th century. The building is likely designed by George Corson for John Sykes. It features red and polychrome brick with stone dressings, a slate roof, and cast-iron railings. The structure has four storeys over a basement and consists of seven bays.
The central stone doorway has a Moorish arch supported by columns with carved capitals, and there is a circular fanlight in a stone frame that includes the carved date and initials 'I S'. The ground floor is arcaded, with carved capitals and arched window heads. Above this, the first and second floors have segmental arch windows with stone architraves featuring keyblocks and moulded sills on brackets. The third floor has two-light round arch windows set within a Gothic arcade, with a continuous moulded sill. The basement is rusticated and includes a balustrade and gates with circular panels and standards topped with vase finials. The building is capped with a deep moulded modillion eaves cornice and has a truncated ridge stack on the left.
The interior has not been inspected. In 1861, the premises were occupied by J Sykes and Son, a merchant, and by 1870, the business was known as Hudson, Sykes and Bousfield, woollen manufacturers and merchants. George Corson designed many warehouses in this area as merchants sought premises near the railways, especially after the Cloth Halls ceased operation.
