Description
No. 20 Park Place is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built in 1789 by William Hargrave for John Plowes, a merchant, and underwent restoration in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a slate roof. It stands three stories tall with five bays. The central entrance has two panelled doors with an overlight, set in a possibly restored doorcase that includes a wide architrave and pediment. The windows are sashes with restored glazing bars, stone sills, and rubbed brick flat arches, along with a continuous sill band on the first floor. The building is topped with a bracketed eaves cornice. The interior has not been inspected. William Hargrave, a master carpenter, built more than 14 houses on Park Place for gentleman merchants moving away from the crowded town center. This building is included for its group value.
