Description

No. 78 on Wellington Street is a former warehouse, now used as offices, with basement railings. It was built in 1903 and converted in the late 20th century. The architects were George Corson and W Evan Jones, with Perkin and Bulmer as associate architects, commissioned by Crowe and Co., who were wholesale warehousemen.

The building is constructed from pink terracotta and red brick, likely with a steel frame, and features wrought-iron railings. It has four storeys above a basement and consists of nine bays. The central doorway projects and is topped with a segmental pediment, featuring moulded plaques that display the date and 'C & Co' in the tympanum. The basement windows have flat arches, while the ground floor has moulded elliptical arches, a moulded sill band, and a cornice above. The second, third, and fourth floors include recessed canted bays with moulded surrounds in terracotta, adorned with keyblocks and ornate terracotta relief friezes between the storeys. The building has a plain parapet that is shaped over the outer two bays, with a central panel that likely held a name plaque. The left return side has five bays, with the left bays being single and two storeys high, and the roof line rises to full height at the centre and right bays.

The interior has not been inspected. This building is one of the last projects associated with George Corson, who passed away in 1910. By 1907, Crowe and Company were known as wholesale drapery, haberdashery, and boot manufacturers and warehousemen.
