Description

Coronation Buildings, located at 68-74 Vicar Lane in Leeds, is a Grade II listed building constructed in 1902, with alterations made in the 20th century. This structure features terracotta cladding and stands four storeys tall with four bays on the front, a six-bay return on Sidney Street, and a four-bay rear elevation facing Harewood Street.

The ground floor has a late 20th-century shop fascia that aligns with the structural divisions. On the first floor, there are paired round-headed windows with moulded surrounds and voussoirs, along with a plaque above the left former entrance bay to chambers. The second floor showcases paired rectangular windows, a moulded entablature, and segmental pediments. The third floor features triple windows, an entablature and cornice, and a moulded segmental plaque with raised lettering that reads '1902/ CORONATION BUILDINGS'. The facade is distinguished by hexagonal projecting banded pilasters at the bay divisions, which rise to plinths above the cornice, although the finials are missing.

The rear elevation on Harewood Street is similar in design, but the ground-floor shop fascia does not obscure the elaborate door and window heads, which may also be present on the front and left returns. A directory from 1910 lists various occupants of the building, including Farrows Bank Ltd at No.68, a grocer at No.70, Wallpaper Stores Ltd at No.72, and J Roberts billiard room at No.74.

The interior has not been inspected. The building was completed during the reign of Edward VII, who was crowned in 1902 following the death of his mother, Queen Victoria.
