Description
The war memorial, located approximately 200 metres east of the Church of St Chad, was built around 1920. It is constructed from ashlar and features octagonal steps, a plinth, and a cross base, topped by a tall tapering chamfered cross. There is a curved rear screen wall on the west side, about 1 metre high, with end piers that rise to approximately 2 metres and span an overall length of 6 metres. The cross base is inscribed with '1914/1918'.
On the south end pier of the screen wall, there is an oval bronze plaque with raised lettering that reads: 'IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF FAR HEADINGLEY/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-18', along with a list of 76 names and the phrase 'I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE'. A plaque on the north pier lists 28 names from the Second World War (1939-45). Additionally, on the north face of this pier, there is a plaque commemorating the establishment of the St Chad's Garden of Rest, which was laid out by Mr JW Wootton in May 1938.
