Description

This is a pump located approximately 10 metres behind the Gascoigne Almshouses, built around 1844, likely designed by the architect George Fowler Jones who also designed the Almshouses. The pump is made of dressed limestone and features an iron mechanism. It has a square section with a pedestal that has a chamfered plinth and a weathered top. The cubical superstructure has three vertical louvres on each side and a pyramidal cap of limestone that mimics a roof with swept eaves. On the right-hand (north) side, there is a long S-shaped iron handle with a twisted shank. The front of the pedestal, which faces the rear door of the Almshouses, is adorned with a carved grotesque that has an open mouth serving as the spout, and a semi-octagonal stone bowl that projects from the plinth.
