Description
No. 1 Oxford Place is a shop that has been converted into offices, dating from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with stone detailing and features a graduated grey slate roof. It has two storeys and two bays. On the left side, there is a doorcase with pilasters and an entablature topped by a shallow pediment. To the right, the former shop window also has pilasters and an entablature with a cornice. The upper floor features slightly cambered window heads made of rubbed bricks and a continuous sill band. There is a narrow inserted window on the ground floor to the left, which may have originally served as a tunnel to the rear of the premises. The interior has not been inspected. Historical maps show that in 1850, only the Methodist Chapel was present in Oxford Place, but by 1866, the street had been developed with small shops facing the new Town Hall.
