Description

Walshan Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the 17th century, with an addition or rebuilding dated 1743 at the first floor. The building consists of two parts: the earlier section is made of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, while the later section is constructed from red handmade brick in stretcher bond, all under a blue slate roof. The cottage has two units and two storeys.

The earlier part, which forms the right-hand half, features quoins at both front corners, a glazed door in an altered or inserted opening, and a 3-light casement window to the right. Above, there are modern 2- and 3-light casements in enlarged openings. Notably, the right-hand gable wall has a recessed chamfered window on each floor towards the front. The left half, built of brick, includes a 3-course band, a segmental-headed doorway near the junction, and a segmental-headed 3-light casement to the left. Above, there are matching casements of 3 and 2 lights, and between these is a segmental-headed datestone inscribed with "John Walshan Anno Domini 1743," embellished with a flourish on either side of the date. The cottage has cut-down gable chimneys, while the left return wall and rear are of less interest, featuring a large modern extension to the rear of the right-hand part.

Inside, the right-hand part has a single depth with a longitudinal beam that has a cyma-stopped chamfer and a shallow stone-arched fireplace. The left part has double depth with a stop-chamfered lateral beam and stop-chamfered joists, along with an original elliptical-arched fireplace with coving above.
