Description
The stallion pens, built in 1813 for Richard Oliver Gascoigne, are located about 113 meters northeast of Home Farm on the Parlington Estate. They sit along the east side of a lane leading to the estate's north entrance at Barwick Lodge and are positioned immediately south of Willowgarth Plantation. The four pens are arranged in a linear north-south layout and are enclosed by walls made of coursed limestone, standing approximately eight feet high. The corners of the walls are rounded to prevent injury to the stallions.
Each pen features wide corner entrances with tall cylindrical limestone gate piers at the northwest and southwest corners of the north and south pens, respectively. The two middle pens have narrower west pedestrian entrances with square gate piers and modern boarded doors. All piers are topped with domed caps. Originally, the caps of the northwest and southwest corner entrance piers were adorned with finials shaped like horse's heads, which have since been removed.
The internal walls dividing the pens remain intact, along with gateways that have cylindrical gate piers connecting each pen. Historic plans indicate that each pen once included a corner shelter, but these have been removed. The footprints of the shelters can still be seen on satellite imagery, and the eastern entrances of the two middle pens and the north pen have been filled in with large coursed sandstone blocks.
