Description
The Triumphal Arch, dated 1783, is located in Parlington Park and was designed by Thomas Leverton, likely for Thomas Gascoigne of Parlington Hall. This limestone structure is a free-standing wall with three bays. The main feature is a large round-headed archway, with imposts that extend across the flanking bays, forming a string course that is interrupted by giant pilasters. Each side bay contains a smaller round-headed arch, which has a moulded extrados, keystone, and imposts, all set within a square-headed recess. Above these arches is a blind oval panel. The entablature features a moulded cornice and a finely lettered frieze that reads: "LIBERTY IN N AMERICA TRIUMPHANT MDCCLXXXIII." The parapet is adorned with pilasters that continue the design. The opposite side of the arch is identical to the front.
