Description
The Light Arch is a bridge built in the late 18th century that carries the south drive of the Parlington Estate over Parlington Lane, which is situated in a deep cutting. Constructed from coursed limestone, likely sourced from the estate's own quarries, the bridge features a segmental arched span with plain voussoirs that rest on quoined jambs. A substantial flush ashlar impost band was added in 1837 to raise the bridge. The design is consistent on both sides, with no parapets above the arch's spandrels and flat copings on top. High limestone walls with rounded copings flank the bridge, extending north alongside Parlington Lane and southwest towards the nearby Dark Arch, creating the walls of the cutting with ramped sections next to the bridge. A central section of walling that once connected the Light Arch to the Dark Arch has been removed, although some footings remain.
