Description
The Former Salem United Reformed Church is an independent chapel that has been converted into a youth training workshop. It opened in 1790 and underwent alterations in 1901. The building is constructed of squared gritstone and features a slate roof that is hipped at the front. It has a modillion cornice and a parapet adorned with a wreath carved in relief, along with chamfered quoins.
The entrance front is two storeys high and has an elliptical shape with curved steps leading up to it. The centre of the facade projects forward and features paired doorways supported by pilasters and an entablature. This is flanked by doors leading to stairways and by round-headed windows. Above, there are two and three-light windows with moulded sills, aprons, and keyblocks. On the south side, the original structure remains intact, showcasing three round-headed windows on the ground floor with plain surrounds, an impost, and a first-floor band, while rectangular windows are present on the upper floor. The north side mirrors the fenestration of the south side and has a buttress on the right.
Inside, there are staircases to the left and right of the entrance, but no original features have been preserved as the gallery has been floored over. The chapel was notable for having influential business and professional families among its congregation at the turn of the 19th century. The building, minus the curved entrance block, is depicted on the 1847 Ordnance Survey map.
