Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Wilfrid, built in 1788, features an attached presbytery that may have been added later and has undergone alterations. Constructed from coursed squared magnesian limestone with a slate roof, the church is a rectangular structure that occupies the northern half of the building. It has three tall round-headed windows with keystones on the front wall and three similar windows on the rear wall. A small porch has been added to a relocated entrance at the north end of the front, and there is patched masonry where the former doorway was located in the north gable wall, with a lunette above it. The interior consists of a single vessel with an inserted gallery at the north end. The presbytery is two storeys high and has three symmetrical bays. It features an altered central doorway with a glazed door and fanlight that has radiating glazing bars, along with two vertical rectangular windows at ground floor and three above, all with altered glazing. Both the church and presbytery share a roof, with chimneys located at their junction and at the south gable of the presbytery. The rear of the presbytery has also had its openings altered.
