Description
The war memorial located 1 metre south of the Church of St Martin is a significant structure dating from around 1920. Made of gritstone, it is designed in the style of a medieval pilgrims' cross. The memorial features an octagonal base with recessed panels, with the front panel displaying raised lettering that reads: 'TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY/ OF THOSE/ WHO DIED FOR US/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914, 1918'. Above the base, there is a tall tapering cross shaft topped with a floriate cross, which rests on a carved octagonal plinth. The shaft itself includes a carved shield that displays an anchor and papal cross, surmounted by a crown.
