Description
The Parish Church of All Saints is a Grade I listed building located on Kirkgate in Otley. The earliest parts of the church are the chancel and transepts, constructed from rubble stone. These sections feature tall Perpendicular windows, along with two Norman windows in the chancel and remnants of another Norman window that was replaced by a Perpendicular window at the east end. The nave is spacious and has an eastern window above the chancel. The aisles date from the 14th to 15th centuries and include embattled parapets and Perpendicular windows. The western tower, likely from the 14th or 15th century, also has an embattled parapet and a small lead-covered wooden spire. The south porch is characteristic of the 18th century. On the north side, there are parts of a Norman doorway that is probably not in its original position. Inside, at the west end of the north aisle, are shafts of three Saxon crosses and a large medieval grave slab with Gothic lettering. The oak pulpit is typical of Georgian design. The church contains numerous monuments dedicated to notable local families, including an altar tomb with recumbent effigies of the grandparents of Thomas, Lord Fairfax, who commanded the Parliamentary army during the Civil War. There are 19th-century railings along Church Lane, featuring standards with arrowheads. The Parish Church of All Saints and the memorial to the victims of the Bramhope Tunnel Disaster form a group with Nos 1 and 2 Church Lane.
