Description

The Lodge House, gate piers, flanking walls, and railings date from around 1846 and were built for Thomas England. The lodge is constructed of coursed squared stone with a slate roof and features an entrance gateway with inner and outer pairs of monolithic gritstone gate piers. The wrought-iron railings are set on a low moulded plinth wall between the left inner and outer piers, which have plain pointed finials. The flanking walls are approximately 5 meters long and 2 meters high, with moulded coping.

The lodge itself is two storeys high and designed in a Tudor style, featuring three canted bays. It has a central porch that was originally open but has been infilled in the late 20th century. On either side of the porch are Tudor arched two-light windows with hoodmoulds, and there are three two-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds on the first floor. A moulded string course runs along the first floor, and the steeply pitched gable is topped with two ridge stacks that have two and three circular flues.

The lodge is in a style similar to Headingley Castle and was located at the end of a long drive that served both that house and the now-demolished Highfields when the 1850 Ordnance Survey map was created. The drive to Wesley College, now Mount St Joseph's, was built around 1867, which is likely when the gate piers were constructed. A new lodge for Headingley Castle was also built around that time, now known as No. 70 Headingley Lane.
