Description
The Church of Emmanuel is a Gothic Revival church built in 1868. It is constructed of hammer dressed stone with ashlar dressings and quoins, topped with a pitched slate roof. The church features a nave with three bays, a south aisle with four bays, and a two-bay chancel. In the south-west corner stands a square three-tier tower, which has angle buttresses and an entrance on the south side with a deep, moulded surround. The tower includes two-light deeply chamfered bell-chamber openings with traceried heads, a clock face on three sides, a crenellated parapet with gargoyles, and a squat, pyramidal slated spire. The nave windows on the north side are three-light with intersecting tracery, featuring two quatrefoils and one trefoil in the head. The aisle windows are two-light with tracery, and there is a rose window at the east end of the aisle. The east window is three-light with a traceried head, while the large west window is four-light with curvilinear tracery.
Inside, there is a four-bay arcade to the south supported by quatrefoil piers. The chancel arch is set on paired red granite colonnettes resting on corbel brackets. The roof features an arched braced hammer beam design. The font, of the 'Tulip' type from 1868, has a tall, carved oak cover that was added in 1894.
