Description

Shelley Methodist Church is a Methodist New Connexion chapel built between 1785 and 1786. It features an early to mid 19th-century organ in the left wing on the south side and a meeting room wing added around 1850 to 1860 on the west gable. The building is constructed of thinly coursed rubble and hammer dressed stone, with quoins on the main chapel. It has a stone slate roof with gable copings on cut kneelers and stands two storeys tall. The original north elevation has three bays of square windows with glazing bars and a simple doorway. The organ wing includes round arched windows on the first floor of the side elevations, while the meeting room wing has two bays with sash windows. The west gable features a Venetian window.

Inside, the church has a broader-than-long plan with a gallery on three sides supported by wooden columns, accessible via stone stairs in each gable end. The organ loft and choir stalls are located at gallery level, connected to the chapel below through a cambered head opening in the original wall, with stairs leading from the choir vestry. The original gallery pews have high settle backs, some with doors, while those facing the gangway have reel backs, and the back row features 'Chinese Chippendale' pierced openings for light from the north windows. The downstairs pews and high pulpit, made of fine quality pine, date from around 1860, and the ceiling includes four simply moulded roses.
