Description

Linthwaite Hall is a building dating from around 1600, with a slightly later extension to the northeast. It was originally a manor house and features deeply coursed, finely dressed stone with quoins on the later part. The building has continuous drip mouldings between floors on all elevations except the southwest, a pronounced plinth, and a stone slate roof with chamfered gable copings and stone finials. It has two storeys and an attic, with three rendered stacks or a single base.

The main part of the house has a large crossing to the southwest and a smaller, two-storey gabled porch on the southeast and northwest elevations. The original windows are double chamfered, most featuring hood-moulds with decorative returns. The main entrance, located in the two-storey gabled porch, is slightly arched with chamfered reveals. There is a three-light window on the first floor, and to the right, a seven-light mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor, along with a seven-light stone mullioned window on the first floor. The projecting cross to the far right has two, three, and four-light stone mullioned windows, with a six-light mullioned and transomed window at the first-floor level.

At the northeast end, the roof continues to the line of the porch, featuring one single, one three-light, and one two-light stone mullioned window. The southeast elevation is similar to the northwest. The gable of the crossing has a five-light mullioned and transomed window on both the ground and first floors, with a two-light window in the attic. Both the northeast gable and southwest elevations include original two-light windows and several recent openings.
