Description
Priestroyd Mills is a historic industrial building located at the corner of Firth Street and Queen Street South, constructed in 1835 and 1869. The structure is made of hammer-dressed stone and features a pitched slate roof. The main block facing Firth Street has five storeys, while the side facing Queen Street South has four storeys. It is adorned with a modillion eaves cornice and has coped gable ends on kneelers. There are 14 ranges of industrial windows on Queen Street South and 17 on Firth Street.
The most striking feature is the impressive tower at the corner, which has an irregular plan and is one storey taller than the rest of the building. This tower is topped with a steep pitched tiled roof, gabled lucarnes near the top, and elaborate cast iron cresting at the apex. An ashlar plaque near the base is inscribed with "Priestroyd Mills 1869."
To the east along the Firth Street frontage is an earlier block from 1835, which is one storey high with coped gable ends. This section has 15 round-arched windows with vermiculated voussoirs and plain continuous imposts, and three windows at the west end feature a mezzanine floor. A chimney located to the north of this block has an octagonal red brick stack.
At the east end of the 1835 block, the gates feature two cast iron depressed arches—one broad and one very narrow—inscribed with "Priestroyd Iron Works 1835" in relief. The gates appear to be slightly later and are decorated with an elaborate pattern and ornamental finials.
