Description
This building, constructed between 1838 and 1839, served as the Department of Humanities at Huddersfield Technical College, and was formerly known as Newsome County Secondary School. Designed by J P Pritchett of York, it was originally part of Huddersfield College, notable for being attended by H H Asquith.
The building is constructed of ashlar and has a hipped slate roof, featuring a crenellated parapet and corner turrets. Its design is symmetrical, centered around a three-story hall inspired by Wollaton Hall or Inveraray Castle.
The front elevation features a short, projecting central wing with a gabled end. The entrance doorway comprises four moulded panels set within a four-centred arch, flanked by side-lights enclosed within a traceried frame topped with crenellations. Above the entrance is a four-centred arched window with three lights and intersecting tracery, capped with a hoodmould. Stone mullioned windows, two-light and one three-light, are arranged on both floors, with the first-floor windows having arched heads to each light and hoodmoulds.
The central hall has five arched, two-light windows on each side, with a crow-stepped parapet in the center. The rear of the building features an open arcade on the ground floor, with pointed arches and chamfered jambs.
