Description

Former dairy, stable and hayloft, with a barn at right angles, situated 10 metres north west of Kirby Grange Hall. The dairy dates to the 18th century, with an earlier roof structure, while the barn was built in the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed of thin coursed stone, with roughly dressed sandstone dressings around doorways and windows, and have stone slate roofs.

The dairy is two storeys high and oriented north-east to south-west, its southern elevation facing the hall. The central doorway has a hayloft doorway above. To the left is a doorway, now blocked, alongside windows, all with large stone lintels and thin jamb stones. To the right is scattered fenestration, including a doorway at mezzanine level, also blocked, which may have originally had an external staircase. There are two windows at different levels to the right and one to the left, with a later doorway inserted at the right-hand end. Inside, the dairy has a 3-bay king-post roof of a former single-aisled structure, with the aisle now removed. The cambered tie-beam is chamfered with run-out stops; mortice holes, triple pegged, are visible at each end for braces, and at the north end this is morticed into the wall plate, whilst the south end has a mortice for a post. Double-pegged king-posts of low pitch are present with single purlins and mainly oak rafters, along with riven-oak lathes. It is possible the eastern end of the dairy originally housed a bothy, accessed by an external staircase.

The north-south aligned barn has a 5-bay interior. Tall, opposing basket-arched cart entries are located in the central bay, featuring multiple tie-stone jambs and finely dressed voussoirs. A square pitching hole is present in the south gable, and a round owl-hole is set into the apex of the north gable. A straight joint marks the junction between the two ranges. The barn’s interior has a queen post roof, with tusked purlins tenoned and pegged through the principals; two purlins are present on each roof pitch. The hayloft occupies the northernmost two bays, with the floor supported on a large oak spine beam, a re-used timber with a dovetail mortice for the seating of a tie-beam of a roof truss. This is supported by brick pillars. The buildings are included in the listing for group value.
