Description
Lydgate Unitarian Chapel, originally built as a Presbyterian chapel in 1695 and remodeled in 1768, is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features quoins. The chapel has a slate roof with gable copings supported by carved kneelers. Its gable front has a cupola at the apex topped with a ball finial, and is supported by six hexagonal columns. The central door is set within a round arch that includes a keystone and impost blocks, with a small window on each side that shares similar detailing. The front elevation also has three round-arched windows with keystones, impost blocks, and decorative glazing. At the rear gable wall, there are two Venetian windows. Inside, the chapel is said to contain early 19th-century wall memorials, one dated 1814, and a portion of box pew panelling inscribed with "John Armitage 1695." Oliver Heywood preached at the chapel's opening in 1695.
