Description

The Lydgate Oliver Heywood Memorial Sunday School, originally listed as the Lydgate Oliver Wood Memorial Sunday School, was built in 1910 by Edgar Wood and James Henry Sellers. Constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a flat roof concealed by a parapet, it features a modest but sophisticated Arts and Crafts bow front which leads to a simple hall of six bays with round-arched windows. The single-storey ashlar bow front is characterised by closely-set windows. A central recessed porch contains the main entrance, featuring an architrave surround and a tent-gabled parapet above. The recessed upper level of the main hall has a central ashlar section with mullioned and transomed windows. Inscribed above the window in large letters is "LYDGATE SUNDAY SCHOOL OLIVER HEYWOOD MEMORIAL," accompanied by a decorative parapet. The high standard of ashlar work and detailing are considered to be noteworthy.
