Description
The Church of All Saints is a Gothic revival church built in 1830 by architect R D Chantrell, with construction carried out by builders George and William Heywood. The church is made of deeply coursed dressed stone with ashlar dressings, featuring a moulded plinth and a pitched slate roof topped with a parapet that has roll top copings.
The west elevation showcases a central, deeply recessed main doorway adorned with a crenellated frieze above. Above the doorway is a traceried three-light stained glass window, which is complemented by a hood mould that rises to a leaf motif. Flanking the doorway are five-sided buttresses. At the gable apex, there is a tall open bell cote supported by flying buttresses, complete with gargoyles and a cross finial. The bell and winding gear remain intact.
Inside, the nave consists of six bays, each featuring tall slender two-light windows with traceried heads and hood moulds that have figure head stops. The chancel includes a three-light stained glass east window with tracery, and its hood mould rises to a carved boss. Notable interior features include a chancel arch, a carved wooden rood screen with crocketted pinnacles, a carved pulpit, and an altar. A later balcony supported by four slender columns has also been added. The organ was installed in 1979, and the chancel was added in 1877.
