Description
Dod Lea House is a Grade II* listed building located on Longwood Gate. It consists of two distinct parts: the original house built in 1674 and a replacement built in 1841. The 1674 section is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and features a pitched stone slate roof with coped gables supported by cut kneelers, including two moulded finials at the north end. This part of the house is two storeys high and has a string course. The windows have chamfered stone mullions set in double chamfered reveals. On the east side, there is a seven-light window on the first floor and a four-plus-four-light window with a transom on the ground floor, along with garage doors. The south end has a five-light window on the first floor, where the centre three lights are of double height, featuring a transom and rounded heads, along with a hoodmould and lozenge-shaped label stops. The ground floor has a four-plus-four-light window with a transom. A date panel inscribed "GDM 1674" has been reinserted at the rear of the 1841 section, showcasing good Pennine ornament and lettering.
The 1841 part of the house is also made of hammer-dressed stone, with ashlar dressings and a pitched slate roof. It has coped gables, two storeys, a moulded eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The building features rusticated quoins and three ranges of sash windows in plain raised surrounds. The entrance door has two fielded panels and is sheltered by a Tuscan porch with a moulded cornice and blocking course, along with a frieze that includes stone balls set in open panels. An oval oculus is present on the east gable. A date panel from this section has been recently removed and placed in the garden, inscribed "GDM Rebuilded 1841".
