Description

No. 35 Holywell Street is a Grade II* listed house dated 1626. It features two storeys and is constructed of roughcast rubble and timber framing, topped with a stone slate roof that has three large dormers. A drip moulding runs along the first floor, and there is an overhang between the dormers supported by three carved and enriched grotesque brackets, with a central modern red brick chimney stack.

The ground floor has been altered in the late 18th century and includes two 3-light sash windows from the 18th to 19th centuries, with the western window being a modern replica. The front doorway has a plain modern frame with wooden pilasters and a pediment. On the first floor, there are two original 4-light oriel windows with 18th-century wooden casements, each supported by three carved and enriched brackets. The brackets of the western window bear the initials M L and A L along with the date 1626, while the eastern window features three wooden shields, two of which display a chevron between three roses along with the initials M L, A L, and the date 1626.

The side dormers have 18th-century 3-light wooden casements with sliding lights, while the windows in the central dormers are blocked and roughcast. Each dormer has moulded bargeboards that appear to be original. On the northeast side, there is a moulded stone chimney stack with a modern red brick shaft. At the back, on the north side, there is a staircase projection, two gables, and an original 2-light stone moulded and mullioned window on the first floor. This elevation has recently been covered with modern brown tile-hanging, obscuring its original appearance. To the north and east at the back, there is a two-storeyed timber-framed roughcast wing that was extended around 1700 and features two gable ends at eaves level, which is included in the listing.

The interior contains original panelling and a fireplace, along with some blocked original windows in the south wall and two early 18th-century fireplaces. All the listed buildings on the north side of Holywell Street form a group.
