Description
The main barn, located to the north of Moor Head Farmhouse, is an L-shaped structure that dates from the 17th century or earlier, featuring timberwork from that period. The barn has been clad in stone during the 18th and 19th centuries, with various builds and some recent alterations. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and coursed rubble, topped with a stone slate roof that is hipped at the 90-degree turn.
There is a large recent opening in the end wall, and a part-blocked cart entry on the side within a lean-to addition, along with a smaller doorway opposite. The barn has later additions at each end. Inside, the main barn includes four king post trusses with struts and an extended king post that supports a diagonally set ridge, all resting on posts that are braced to tie-beams. At the 90-degree turn, there is an additional truss on posts similar to the others, and evidence of a second truss with posts at a lower level. Many of the timbers feature stop-chamfered edges, while the rafters and the timberwork supporting the hip appear to be from the 19th century.
