Description

The Church of St Peter is a church that features a Norman tower, south doorway, and chancel arch, with the remainder of the structure built in a Neo-Norman style in 1881. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone, with the tower made of coursed rubble and a stone slate roof that has gable copings. The layout includes a west tower, a three-bay nave with aisles, a south porch, and a two-bay lower chancel with a vestry wing to the north. There are single three-light gabled dormers on both the north and south pitches of the nave. The nave is adorned with triple groups of round-arched windows that feature hood moulds, and the east window has a triple group design with engaged colonnettes, a hood mould, and zig-zag decoration.

A reset stone in the vestry wall is dated 1713 and lists the names of five church wardens. The south porch showcases zig-zag and bead and reel decoration, with colonnette reveals and a hood mould that has beak-head stops. The square west tower has a slightly corbelled crenellated parapet, and the bell chamber openings are two-light, with one being transomed and some round-arched. The south doorway and chancel arch share a design that includes two orders of columns with decorated scallop capitals and decorated abaci, along with intricate close zig-zag work in the arch. Each side of the church has a three-bay arcade, and the aisle windows feature detached colonnettes.

Inside, there is an 1881 font resting on a Norman base, and a carved oak Holy Table, now located in the south chapel, was donated by Sir John Armytage of Kirklees in 1708. A 17th-century candelabrum from Hartshead Hall is also present in the nave. Additionally, there is an Armytage family crypt located under the chancel.
