Description

This is a mid-19th century ashlar-built house, Ravensdean, located on Thornhill Road in Edgerton. The house has a shallow-pitched slate roof and a modillioned eaves cornice. It is two storeys high. The front elevation features two ranges of sashes, with ground floor sashes having moulded cornices resting on moulded consoles, and sculpted panels below the consoles. These ranges are flanked by a three-storey tower with a pyramidal roof. The tower has rusticated quoins to the ground and first floors, and angle pilasters to the second floor. A prominent eight-panelled front door is topped with a semi-circular fanlight and moulded transom, further embellished by elaborate foliate impost blocks and vermiculated voussoirs. The first-floor window features a guilloche-patterned balcony supported by gadrooned consoles. The second-floor window is distinguished by a raised frame and rosettes within aprons, with an entablature that rises to form a semi-circle in the centre. The garden front presents two window ranges; the west range is gabled and includes a ground floor canted bay with sculpted panels above the windows, a moulded eaves cornice, a blocking course, and ornamental cast iron railings. A tripartite sash window above is separated by Composite colonnettes supporting semi-circular arches with moulded voussoirs and fluted keystones. The east range has a single sash window on the first floor and a tripartite sash window on the ground floor, featuring a moulded cornice on scrolled consoles and sculpted panels below. The chimneys have moulded cornices. A long office wing extends to the south-west.
