Description
These former stables, now used as classrooms, were built in 1865 by John Gibson for John Fielden. They are constructed of pitch-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a felt roof. The stables feature seven symmetrical bays, with the central three bays projecting forward and containing a semi-circular arched entrance leading to an inner courtyard. There are lunettes on either side of the arched entrance. Above the bays is a corbel table and a castellated parapet which rises centrally to form a square tower. This tower has a circular opening, now blocked, which may have once housed a clock. A false machicolation sits atop the castellated parapet, which is surmounted by a weather vane. The outer bays are also adorned with lunettes, with the lunette on the left being deeper than the one on the right.
