Description

Woodhouse Mill is a mill built in 1832, featuring an engine house and a detached chimney located 20 meters to the south. The structure is made of ashlar stone and has a stone slate roof, standing five storeys tall. The north elevation faces the Rochdale Canal and originally consisted of ten bays. The fifth bay includes a taking-in door on each floor, topped with a pediment that has a band, cat-head, and bullseye displaying the date. The right gable is coped, while the left side has two additional bays added, each with windows on every floor featuring plain stone surrounds and projecting sills with small panes. The right-hand return wall has four bays of windows, and a stair tower that breaks forward by one bay is blind on its north and west sides. The rear of the mill has an added bay of windows in the stair tower, which extends above the roof in brick to form a water tower.

Attached to the rear is a two-storey engine house, which features a tall semi-circular arched window and a two-span roof with a former office. The chimney at the site has pitch-faced stone at the base, is square in plan, and has a moulded cornice with a tall circular tapering section topped with a ringed cap.

This mill is particularly noteworthy as it was steam-driven from the beginning, making it an early example of such technology. It is distinguished by its well-preserved fenestration and window glazing, and its prominent location by the canal enhances its significance in the landscape.
