Description

The Fold is a house, largely of the 17th century, with possible earlier fabric and alterations in the 18th century. It is built of traditional stone with a stone roof. The house is mainly two storeys high, featuring three irregular gables to the south, with a very narrow, single-storeyed section in the center. It has mullioned and transomed windows. The east return is gabled and built into a hillside. The rear elevation incorporates a mix of window styles; the later, simpler mullioned windows contrast with earlier windows featuring round-arched lights in a large gabled wing. The rear of the west wing has been rendered and altered.

The house has a timber-framed structure, rebuilt in stone, with a pitched stone slate roof. Internally, the house body is open to the rafters, revealing two posts tenoned for arch braces and braced to a wall plate. King post trusses are braced to the ridge, with studs running parallel to the rafters. The house comprises three gabled wings and a rear extension. The west wing may be contemporary with the main house body, as it also features arch-braced trusses braced to an aisle plate, with studs parallel to the rafters. Further east, the house body extends beyond the east wing, which may represent the next phase of construction. Another wing is situated at a re-entrant angle with the house body, also exhibiting arch-braced king post trusses braced to the ridge. A timber studded partition separates the passage from the west wing. A 19th-century staircase and gallery are within the hall.
