Description
This is a house built in 1678, with an extension added in 1767 to create a courtyard plan. The construction uses hammer-dressed stone, covered by a stone slate roof. The original 17th-century house faces north into the courtyard and has a through passage plan, meaning it is a double-pile building. On the north front, at the left-hand end, is a doorway with a moulded surround and a depressed Tudor lintel inscribed "SI 1678", along with a small two-light window, false arched heads, and a curved head which terminates a string course that runs across the entire facade. Most of the windows on this front are double-chamfered mullioned and transomed, originally with 20 lights, although some have been reduced to 12. There is a 12-light window above, and a 10-light window to the right, with two cross windows beneath. Above the cross passage is another window. The opposite side of the courtyard has a segmental cart entry with a dropped keystone, dated 1767 and bearing the initials '- SI'. The south front is notable for its doorway with a pulvinated frieze. The east gable front, which has been raised, features various blocked openings, a columbarium (dovecote), and four bays of the 18th-century range, with flat-faced mullion windows of four lights, some of which have been reduced to two. The front facade facing Marsh Lane has similar windows, although they have mostly been altered.
