Description
The gateway and stone steps, along with an outbuilding attached to the southwest of Heptonstall Grammar School Museum, date from 1765 but may have origins in the late 17th century. The gateway features large dressed stone walls with composite jambs and a cyma moulded surround that includes the date on the lintel. It has ovolo moulded coping. There are two flights of stone flagged steps with a half landing, which are equipped with cast iron railings. Adjacent to the gateway is a small stone building with a monopitch stone slate roof, complete with quoins and a doorway accessed from the landing. This building has monolithic jambs, one of which includes a tie-stone. Its original purpose is unclear, but it may have served as a privy for the school.
