Description

Heptonstall Grammar School Museum is a building dating from 1771, originally a school, with attached cottages from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of large dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The school is two storeys high on Church Lane and single storey at the front, while the cottages are three storeys on Church Lane and two storeys at the front.

The Church Lane elevation shows the school on the left with three bays of simple Venetian windows on each floor, all featuring false keystones. There is a doorway between the first and second bays and paired doorways between the second and third bays, all with tie-stone jambs and chamfered surrounds. Above the paired doorways is a single window with a semi-circular arched lintel, impost block, and keystone. All windows have small pane glazing. The cottages project forward and are taller, with two cells and paired doorways at the centre. The cottages have double chamfered mullioned windows, with three lights on the left for each floor and three lights with five-light windows above on the right.

On the Church Yard front, there are doorways on either side of a six-light window with a king mullion, and two three-light windows on the first floor. The school section breaks forward, featuring two doorways with tie-stone jambs and chamfered surrounds, one of which has a richly moulded recess above, while the other has been converted into a window. This doorway is inscribed with "HEPTONSTALL 1642 GRAMMAR SCHOOL." The south gable has a three-light double chamfered mullioned window in the attic, with a coped gable and kneelers. There are lateral stacks at the front and rear, as well as one on the ridge. A plaque on the front reads: "HEPTONSTALL GRAMMAR SCHOOL FOUNDED 1642 BY ENDOWMENT OF THE REV. CHARLES GREENWOOD M.A. RECTOR OF THORNHILL LORD OF THE MANOR OF HEPTONSTALL REBUILT 1772 CLOSED 1889."

Inside the school room, there is a stone fireplace with a flat-arched lintel and a chamfered stone shelf, along with a fitted bookcase that has a semi-circular arched surround. Earlier in this century, the building was used as a bank by the Yorkshire Penny Bank.
