Description

Chantry House is a house that was formerly a charnel house for the graveyard, dated "1779". It features watershot masonry and a stone slate roof, and is two storeys tall with an attic. The main entrance is at the rear and has two doorways with tie-stone jambs and a chamfered surround, one of which has been blocked to create a two-light window. To the right, there is a five-light chamfered mullioned window with a four-light window above it on the first floor. The building has quoins, and the elevation facing the graveyard includes a former doorway on the first floor that has been blocked to form a window, along with three chamfered mullioned windows of two lights. The attic features two windows of two lights and a decorative date tablet set in a cyma moulded recess, topped by a broad coped gable.

Inside, the house was completely refurbished in 1965 by Mr. Jack Smith, who collected 17th-century details from the area. The entrance hall has board and muntin panelling from Great Learings, topped by a plaster frieze dated 1629 that was saved from High Hurst in Hebden Royd when it was demolished. More panelling can be found on the first floor. The main living room features a Tudor arched fireplace dated 1635, which is set within a tressure taken from the then derelict Stocks Springs in Cragg Vale, Hebden Royd. Additionally, there is a highly decorative plaster motif of a mermaid from Old Chamber in Hebden Royd.
