Description
Sowood House is a house dating from the mid-17th century, constructed of thin coursed hammer-dressed stone, with some parts rendered, and features a stone slate roof. The building has a four-plan layout and is two storeys high, comprising a hall and cross-wings with a through passage. The front has four bays, with a doorway that has a segmental arch and composite jambs. Most windows are double chamfered mullioned windows, except for the first bay where they have been altered. The remaining windows include five lights on the ground floor and six, two, three, and five lights above, with the last bay's windows having lost their outer mullions but still retaining their hoodmoulds. The gables are coped and feature kneelers and rainwater spouts. The rear of the house retains original five-light windows on both floors of the left-hand wing, along with a similar doorway to the through passage. There is one lateral stack on the right-hand wing, another stack on the ridge aligned with the through passage wall, and one on the gable of the main range.
